Leadership and Vision
What is your long-term vision for your exchange?
Our long-term vision for the Muscat Stock Exchange is to position it as a deeper, more dynamic capital market that plays a central role in Oman’s economic transformation. Capital markets today are not merely platforms for trading securities; they are strategic financial infrastructures that mobilise long-term capital, strengthen corporate governance, and support private-sector growth.
Over the past few years, we have been focused on strengthening the institutional foundations of the market. This includes improving liquidity, expanding the investor base, strengthening disclosure standards, and introducing new market segments such as the Alternative Investment Market (AIM Market), which is designed to support the growth of emerging companies and SMEs.
Looking ahead, our objective is to continue building a market that is more accessible, more transparent, and more attractive to both regional and global investors. By deepening liquidity, strengthening market infrastructure, and broadening the pipeline of listings, we aim to ensure that the Muscat Stock Exchange becomes a key financial platform supporting Oman’s long-term development under Vision 2040.
How do you see the exchange evolving to meet the needs of issuers, investors and market participants?
Capital markets must evolve in ways that balance the needs of issuers, investors and intermediaries. For issuers, the priority is access to efficient and diversified sources of capital. For investors, the focus is on transparency, liquidity, and strong governance. For market participants such as brokers and custodians, the key requirement is a reliable and efficient trading environment.
At MSX, we are addressing these priorities through several initiatives. We have strengthened liquidity by introducing market makers and liquidity providers, including both local and international participants, which has improved trading continuity and price discovery.
We have also expanded engagement with global investors through international roadshows and participation in major financial forums, helping to raise awareness of Oman’s investment opportunities.
At the same time, we continue to enhance the regulatory and operational framework of the market to ensure that all participants operate within a transparent and efficient ecosystem aligned with international standards.
Your Vision for the Industry
Looking ahead, how do you see the global exchanges industry developing?
The global exchange industry is undergoing a period of significant transformation. Exchanges today are evolving beyond traditional trading venues into integrated financial platforms that combine market infrastructure, technology, data services, and capital formation.
In the coming years, we will likely see increased connectivity between markets, greater cross-border investment flows, and continued development of new financial instruments and asset classes.
Another key trend is the growing role of exchanges in supporting transparency and governance across financial markets. Exchanges increasingly act as institutional anchors that reinforce regulatory standards, investor protection, and disclosure discipline.
For emerging and frontier markets, these trends represent an important opportunity to strengthen credibility and attract global capital.
What are the key themes shaping the industry over the next few years?
Several themes are likely to shape the evolution of the global exchanges industry.
First, liquidity and market depth will remain central to the competitiveness of exchanges. Institutional investors allocate capital to markets where trading volumes, transparency, and price discovery mechanisms are well established.
Second, technology and digital infrastructure will continue to transform the way markets operate. Exchanges are investing heavily in trading systems, data platforms, and digital services that improve market efficiency and accessibility.
Third, sustainability and governance standards are becoming increasingly important for global investors. Markets that demonstrate strong transparency, governance, and disclosure practices will continue to attract long-term institutional capital.
Strategy and Market Development
What do you see as the greatest opportunities for your exchange in the coming years?
One of the greatest opportunities for the Muscat Stock Exchange lies in supporting Oman’s broader economic diversification agenda. As the Sultanate continues to expand its non-oil sectors and strengthen the role of the private sector, capital markets will play a critical role in financing growth.
There is also significant potential to expand the pipeline of listings, particularly through government privatisation initiatives and the development of new market segments such as the AIM Market.
At the same time, the growing interest of international investors in emerging and frontier markets presents an opportunity for Oman to attract long-term global capital, particularly as the country continues to strengthen its regulatory framework and macroeconomic stability.
What are the main challenges exchanges face today, and how is your organisation addressing them?
Exchanges around the world face several common challenges. One of the most significant is the need to maintain deep and consistent liquidity while expanding the number of listed companies and financial instruments.
Another challenge is ensuring that market infrastructure keeps pace with technological developments and international regulatory standards.
At MSX, we are addressing these challenges by strengthening liquidity through the introduction of market makers, enhancing governance and disclosure standards, investing in market infrastructure, and expanding engagement with international investors.
Our focus is on building a market ecosystem that combines stability, transparency, and efficiency.
Leadership Journey
Could you tell us about your professional journey and what led you to become CEO of your exchange?
My professional journey has been closely connected to the development of Oman’s capital market. Over the years, I have worked across several areas of the financial sector, gaining experience in market operations, financial infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks.
This experience has provided a broad perspective on how capital markets function and how they can contribute to economic development.
Leading the Muscat Stock Exchange today is both a professional responsibility and an opportunity to contribute to the continued development of Oman’s financial ecosystem.
What excites you most about your current position?
What excites me most about leading the exchange is the opportunity to contribute to the transformation of Oman’s capital market at a time when the country is pursuing an ambitious economic vision.
Capital markets play an essential role in supporting sustainable growth, and being part of that transformation – helping connect companies with capital and investors with opportunities – is extremely rewarding.
What aspects of leading an exchange do you find particularly rewarding?
One of the most rewarding aspects is seeing how the market evolves over time. When improvements in governance, liquidity, and investor engagement translate into stronger market performance and greater investor confidence, it demonstrates that institutional development is making a real difference.
It is also rewarding to work with a wide range of stakeholders – listed companies, investors, regulators, and market participants – who all contribute to building a stronger and more resilient market.
