The overall market capitalisation of exchanges as at end 2018 was 76.6 trillion USD. This figure is based on data received from 76 exchanges worldwide. In this article we analyse:

Trends when compared to 2017

  • Overall market capitalisation as at end 2018 was down 12.5% on end 2017. This was due to a decline in the market cap across all three regions: the Americas region was down 6.3%, the Asia-Pacific region was down 17.3% and the EMEA region was down 12.5%.
  • The market cap as at the end of the four quarters of 2018 when compared to the same quarter in 2017 was up in all quarters except Q4 2018.

Trends in market capitalisation in 2018

  • The highest month-end market capitalisation of 92.1 trillion USD was recorded in Jan 2018.
  • Both the Asia-Pacific and EMEA regions scaled their peak month-end market cap of 33.1 trillion USD and 20.7 trillion USD in Jan 2018.
  • The Americas region recorded its highest month-end market cap of 40.3 trillion USD in Aug 2018.
  • The lowest month-end market cap across all three regions was observed in Dec 2018.
  • Unlike in 2017 when market cap was consistently increasing from month-to-month, in 2018 the market cap was more volatile. 
  • In 2018, in certain months there was a sharp decline in market cap when compared to the previous month. As a result, the average monthly growth rate in market cap in 2018 it was -1.6% while in 2017 was +1.6%.
  • There was a sharp decline (-12.4%) in the market cap across all three regions in the Q4 2018 when compared to Q3 2018.
