CEO Letter - January 2020

By: The WFE Focus Team Jan 2020

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the first issue of Focus in 2020.

Each January the WFE runs a ‘Looking Ahead’ feature in Focus, with around a dozen CEOs and Chairs from around the world giving their viewpoints on the year ahead, for their business, country, and region.

This year, as we move into a new decade, we have renamed the section ‘The WFE’s 2020 Series’ and have taken a longer-term perspective, inviting our contributors to look ahead even further into the future. We are delighted to feature 13 leaders of our industry, as follows:

  • Urs Rüegsegger, Chairman, SIX Swiss Exchange & Chairman, WFE
  • Ed Tilly, Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer, Cboe Global Markets & Vice Chairman, WFE
  • Vikram Limaye, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of the National Stock Exchange of India & Working Committee Chairman, WFE
  • Mazen Wathaifi, Chief Executive Officer, Amman Stock Exchange
  • Hu Zheng, Chairman, China Financial Futures Exchange
  • Rajeeva Bandaranaike, Chief Executive Officer, Colombo Stock Exchange
  • Mike Bodson, President & Chief Executive Officer, DTCC
  • Leila Fourie, Group Chief Executive Officer, Johannesburg Stock Exchange

  • Jianjun Wang, President & Chief Executive Officer, Shenzhen Stock Exchange
  • Philip Chen, Chairman, Taipei Exchange
  • Yu-Jer Sheu, Chairman, Taiwan Futures Exchange
  • Bilel Sahnoun, Chief Executive Officer, Tunis Stock Exchange

In addition, this year we invited viewpoints from regulators, to better understand how the next few years may develop through a regulatory lens:

  • Dietrich Domanski, Secretary General, Financial Stability Board
  • Gerard Fitzpatrick, Senior Executive Leader, International, Australian Securities and Investments Commission
  • Sam Schulhofer-Wohl, Senior Vice President and Director of Financial Policy, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago

We hope you enjoy reading these unique and insightful perspectives.

The WFE Research Team’s monthly insights article is an update on equity and derivatives markets over the past year. This can be found alongside the regular dashboard and market statistics.

Our first Board and Working Committee meetings of the year took place earlier this month in London, kindly hosted by Nasdaq. We spent two very fruitful days discussing the future direction of the WFE, and kicked off the 2020 workplan by agreeing the strategic priorities for the year ahead. Thank you to everyone who attended the meetings.

The 37th edition of our annual IOMA: WFE’s Clearing & Derivatives Conference will be taking place in Malta from 25-27 March 2020.  This year, we are taking a new, more academic approach to the conference. We look forward to welcoming presentations and debates from a number of leading academics and firms in the CCP space, as they present their latest thinking on topics ranging from concentration in cleared derivatives, and skin in the game, right through to changes in market structure, and model risk. You can see the conference programme here.

We will also be convening the second Enterprise Risk Working Group Congress in Malta, along with an in-person meeting of the CCP Working Group (24 & 25 March). If you are part of those working groups and wish to attend these meetings, please do register as soon as possible.

We hope your year has got off to a good start, and look forward to keeping you updated on WFE news over the coming months. Thank you.
