CEO Letter - December 2017

By: The WFE Team Dec 2017

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to last issue of Focus for 2017. Thank you for your continued support and readership over the past 12 months, as we have grown and evolved the publication into a dynamic and even more relevant journal for the market infrastructure space. Look out for further improvements to the Focus website later on in 2018.

This month, we are very pleased to welcome Mark Peterson, CEO of NZX, who takes us through his first few months as CEO, and looks at the key role the exchange plays within the country's capital markets system.

We have a timely contribution from Michael Leibrock, Chief Systemic Risk Officer at The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) who discusses the results from DTCC’s Q3 2017 Systemic Risk Barometer Survey, a semi-annual pulse check that monitors significant risks that may impact the safety, resiliency and stability of the global financial system.

WFE member Taipei Exchange (TPEx) recently hosted both the Asian and Oceanian Stock Exchanges Federation (AOSEF) Working Committee and the Capital Markets Forum 2017, attended by 10 exchanges and 23 representatives. The Capital Markets Forum is a unique platform for participants to discuss their experiences developing bond products, and to discuss the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for Asian stock markets.

In this issue, the WFE Research Team’s Padmasai Varanasi examines listings, total number of trades and total trading value of investment funds based on recent data received from 37 exchanges.

The first WFE Working Committee of 2018 will take place in Frankfurt on Tuesday 23 January 2018, hosted by Deutsche Boerse AG. The WFE Statistical Advisory Group (SAG) will also meet in Frankfurt, on Monday 22 January 2018. You can access the registration form here, so please sign up soon.

Registration is now open for members for the WFE SME Conference, with host, the Malta Stock Exchange (MSE). The meeting will take place in Malta, from the evening of Sunday 25 February 2018, followed by an in-person meeting of the WFE SME Working Group, and a half-day conference on the afternoon of Monday 26 February 2018, and concluding with a Gala Dinner that evening. Registration will open for affiliates and other guests in the New Year, but in the meantime, find out more about the event here.

We are also looking ahead to the 35th IOMA: The WFE’s Clearing & Derivatives Conference, hosted by OCC (Options Clearing Corporation). The meeting will take place in Chicago, and will start with a reception on the evening of Wednesday 11 April, and run through to Friday 13 April 2018. The WFE’s IOMA conference focuses on post-trade issues and brings together the leaders of the world’s futures & options markets with clearing houses. The conference website will open in January 2018 with full details about the event.

We would like to wish all our readers a happy and healthy holiday season, and best wishes for the New Year. See you in 2018!
